Archibald John Norman (born 1 May 1954) is a Conservative politician and businessman.

Education and business career

Norman attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge where he studied economics and after graduating in 1975 joined Citibank where he worked until 1977. He was awarded an MBA in economics from Harvard Business School in 1979 and joined the management consultancy company McKinsey. [1] He was finance director of Kingfisher plc 1986-91 and chairman of Chartwell Land plc until 1991. He was chief executive of Asda from 1991 to 1996 and Chairman from 1997 to 2000. [2] In 1997 he was elected Conservative MP for Tunbridge Wells, He was chief executive and deputy chairman of the Conservative Party from 1997 to 1999. He was a Shadow Minister in William Hague's Shadow Cabinet, serving as Shadow Minister for Europe 1999-2000 and Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions 2000-01. [3]
