Hesder Yeshivot combine advanced Talmudic studies with IDF military service in a Religious Zionist framework.

History and Development

Idea attributed to Yehuda Amital. First: Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh (1953), modelled on Nahal[](https://www.kby.org/english/history/). Yeshivat Har Etzion founded post-1967 by Yehuda Amital. Expanded with settlement movement from 1970s. Awarded Israel Prize 1991. Now over 80 yeshivot with over 10,000 students[](https://mizrachi.org/hamizrachi/the-ideology-of-hesder/).[1]

Timeline

Function

Intensive Torah study plus shortened IDF service (~17 months, often combat). Includes semicha, teacher training, community service. Some have overseas programs[](https://www.shaalvim.org/yeshiva/about/).[2]

Controversies

Criticism over shorter service versus standard 32 months, accused by some of unequal burden or draft dodging despite combat roles. Internal debates on Torah versus service balance (https://en.idi.org.il/articles/6526; https://traditiononline.org/the-complexity-of-hesder-revisited/).[3][4]

Numbers and Locations

Over 80 total. Many in pre-1967 Israel ("Israel 48") including Jerusalem area (e.g. Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh, Hesder Yeshiva of Sderot, Yeshivat Sha'alvim, Yeshivat HaHesder Yerucham). Significant number beyond Green Line in West Bank settlements and Golan (e.g. Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, Yeshivat Otniel, Yeshivat Shilo, Yeshivat Har Bracha, Yeshivat Birkat Moshe in Ma'ale Adumim)[](https://mizrachi.org/hamizrachi/the-ideology-of-hesder/).[1]

Funding

Israeli government support via hesder program. External: UK Friends of Yeshivat Hesder Sderot (charity); US Friends groups for multiple; donations via UK Toremet Ltd for some (e.g. Ramat Gan Hesder) (https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/en/charity-search/-/charity-details/5094339/governing-document; https://www.jgive.com/new/en/gbp/charity-organizations/577).[5][6]
