Born in Liozna to a scholarly family, Schneur Zalman studied extensively under prominent rabbis before becoming a disciple of [[Dov Ber of Mezeritch]]. He established his court in Liadi and emphasised intellectual understanding (Chochmah, Binah, Da'at) in Hasidic practice.<ref name="ChabadBio" />
