PRI lists a programme in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to counter radicalisation and violent extremism in prisons "through religious dialogue and reintegration programmes".

PRI's Central Asia programme page records several UK-funded projects. A CSSF-funded project in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan aimed at "greater resilience to radicalisation and violent extremism" in prisons: PRI helped draft national countering violent extremism strategies, trained prison staff "on identifying and managing violent extremist offenders" and developed rehabilitation programmes. Other UK-funded work included a Foreign and Commonwealth Office/British Embassy Astana project on anti-corruption in law enforcement in Kazakhstan (working with the Ministry of Interior and the Anti-Corruption Agency), and a British Embassy-funded project supporting Kazakhstan's National Preventive Mechanism against torture. A DFID-funded project, "Humanisation of the criminal justice system in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan", supported criminal codes compliant with international standards. Current non-UK funders include the European Union, UNICEF, the UN Democracy Fund and the US Embassy in Kyrgyzstan.

The Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) reviewed the CSSF's aid spending in March 2018 and gave it an amber-red score, finding the fund responsive to National Security Council priorities but with weak results management and inadequate evidence of outcomes and value for money. ICAI published a follow-up review in 2019.
