==Career==
McKay's health career started in 1970 as a trainee administrator, carrying out a number of roles within the Northern region.

In 1976 he joined the [[St George's Hospital Group]] in London where he undertook a variety of jobs including commissioning of the first phase of the new St George's Hopsital.

He then moved to the [[Wandsworth Health Authority]] for some years where he was responsible for the management of mental health services and services for people with learning difficulties in the Boroughs of Wandsworth and Merton.

In 1985 he was appointed general manager of Doncaster Royal Infirmary and in 1988 he held the same role at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. In 1990 he was part of the hospital when it became one of the first Trust hospitals in England and was CEO for the Northern General Hospital NHS Trust. In 1996 he was appointed regional director for the Trent region. In January 2000 he was appointed deputy chief executive for the NHS Executive.

In 2000 McKay was appointed COO for the [[Department of Health]] and chair of the [[NHS Operational Board]].

He was then appointed chief executive of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2006
