According to The National Archives, it was formed in 1886 and "provided much of the First World War and pre-First World War code-breaking expertise". Its deciphering section, formed in October 1914, was known as Room 40. The Archives say NID was superseded in 1964 by the Defence Intelligence Staff, and that it was concerned with enemy and allied shipping, including plotting shipping movements and collecting information on foreign coasts and coastal defences.

See also
* Room 40
* Government Code and Cypher School
* Defence Intelligence
* Directorate of Military Intelligence
* British Military Intelligence

External links
* The National Archives – Intelligence and security services

Notes
<references/>
