He was Speaker for nine years until he resigned in 2009. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Following his resignation in 2009 Martin was created a life peer as Baron Martin of Springburn, of Port Dundas in the City of Glasgow. Like previous Speakers elevated to the Lords, he sits as a Crossbench peer in the Lords. &lt;br /&gt;
