Sir Leonard Appleyard was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge where he took an Honours Degree in Classical Chinese. Before joining [[Barclays Capital]] in 1998 he was British Ambassador to China from 1994 to 1997. His career in the Foreign Office included posts as Deputy Secretary in the Cabinet Office and Secretary of the Gulf War Cabinet, British Ambassador to Hungary and Financial Counsellor in Paris. He speaks Chinese, Russian, Hungarian and French.
