Albert John Woodrow was born at Nottingham on June 3, 1919 and educated at High Storrs and Sheffield University.<ref>Obituary of Maj-Gen John Woodrew, The The Times, 24 March 1988.</ref><br />

He was commissioned into the Royal Signals in 1940. He served in North-West Europe and in Burma during the war, when he was mentioned in despatches. After the war he became a member of the [[British Services Mission to Burma]]. In 1949 he and his family were captured by the Karen rebels and held for several weeks. Woodrow later served with the Canadian Army, at Rivers, Manitoba, and with the [[British Army on the Rhine]]. He commanded 1st Division Signals Regiment from 1961 until 1963, when he went as a member of the British Army Staff in Washington.
