Knight stood as the [[Labour]] candidate for Dorset South in 1997, winning 35.9 percent of the vote but losing out by 0.2 percent to the [[Conservative]]'s [[Ian Bruce]]. He won the 2001 election by 0.4 percent, with 42 percent of the vote, and the 2005 election with 41.6 percent of the vote.
