{{short description|'''Romania: its Jewish community, Holocaust and emigration history, and relations with "Israel"'''}}
About 8,900 Jews lived in '''Romania''' in 2023, according to the [[World Jewish Congress]] (WJC); before the Holocaust it had one of the largest Jewish communities in the world.<ref name="WJCRO">World Jewish Congress, [https://www.worldjewishcongress.org/en/about/communities/RO Community in Romania] ''worldjewishcongress.org'', accessed 25 October 2026.</ref> Romania has maintained diplomatic relations with "Israel" without interruption since 1948, and was the only communist country to keep them after 1967.<ref name="WJCRO" />

==Jewish community==
Most Romanian Jews live in Bucharest, with other communities in Timișoara, Iași, Cluj and Oradea. The Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania (Federaţia Comunităţilor Evreieşti din România) is the WJC's affiliate.<ref name="WJCRO" />
==Holocaust and emigration==
The WJC says that more than half of Romania's pre-war Jewish population died in the Holocaust. Almost all the Jews of northern Transylvania, under Hungarian rule from 1940, were deported to Auschwitz, and the Antonescu regime set up ghettos and camps in Transnistria. Under communism all Zionist activity was banned, but Romanian Jews "were eventually allowed to immigrate to Israel, provided that the Romanian government received what it considered appropriate remuneration for this 'brain drain'".<ref name="WJCRO" />
==Israeli state and commercial ties==
===Diplomacy===
The Israeli foreign ministry's 2011 list of missions records relations with Romania as recognition in May 1948, with "Israel" represented by its embassy in Bucharest.<ref name="MFA2011">Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, [https://web.archive.org/web/20110805075305/http://www.mfa.gov.il/mfa/about%20the%20ministry/diplomatic%20missions/Israel-s%20Diplomatic%20Missions%20Abroad Diplomatic Missions Abroad: Status of relations] ''mfa.gov.il'', archived 5 August 2011.</ref> The WJC says that in 2018 Romania announced that it would move its embassy in "Israel" to Jerusalem. The Israeli embassy is at 1 Dimitrie Cantemir, Block 2, fifth floor, Unirii Square, Bucharest.<ref name="WJCRO" />
===Arms trade===
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) records a EUR2 billion Romanian order in 2025 for an Israeli short-range air defence system (probably SPYDER-SR); UT-30MK2 turrets for Piranha-5 infantry fighting vehicles produced under licence in Romania (2018); Watchkeeper X (Hermes-450) drones to be produced under licence in Romania (2022); and Spike anti-tank missiles under deals in 2005, 2015 (EUR130 million) and 2024 ($92 million).<ref name="SIPRI">Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, [https://armstransfers.sipri.org SIPRI Arms Transfers Database] ''SIPRI'', trade register for Israel as supplier, 1950–2025, data generated 20 October 2026.</ref>
===Trade===
The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics reports that "Israel" imported goods worth $478.8 million from Romania in 2025 (2024: $444.6 million) and exported goods worth $706.3 million to it (2024: $508.4 million).<ref name="CBS">Central Bureau of Statistics (Israel), [https://www.cbs.gov.il/he/publications/DocLib/2026/fr_trade12_2025/td1.pdf Foreign Trade Statistics Monthly, Table D1: Trade Countries – Imports and Exports] ''CBS'', December 2025 issue (library copy).</ref>
==Political interference==
===UN voting===
Romania voted in favour of the September 2025 General Assembly resolution endorsing the New York Declaration on a two-state solution.<ref name="UNNY2025">United Nations General Assembly, [https://www.alquds.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Voting-rec-L.1-Rev.1.pdf Recorded vote on A/80/L.1/Rev.1: Endorsement of the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution], 12 September 2025 (copy hosted by ''Al-Quds Al-Arabi'').</ref>
