The [[World Jewish Congress]] (WJC) says waves of Jewish immigration began in 1854, and that the Israelite Congregation of Buenos Aires, founded in 1862, was the first Jewish institution in the country. From the 1880s Eastern European Jews arrived, and Baron [[Maurice de Hirsch]]'s [[Jewish Colonization Association]] set up agricultural colonies. In 1894 Jewish organisations united in what became the AMIA. Six Argentine delegates were among the founders of the WJC in Geneva in 1936.<ref name="WJCAR" />
