Born in 1956, James joined [[Scottish Amicable]] in 1977 and spent 10 years as a fund manager followed by senior positions in IT, marketing, finance and corporate development. In 1994 he joined [[Halifax Building Society]] as Managing Director, Halifax Life and following the acquisition of [[Clerical Medical]] in 1996 he became Financial Services and Insurance Director of Halifax plc. In September 2001, following the merger of [[Bank of Scotland]] and Halifax, James became Chief Executive of HBOS plc.
