Dissipation of political power - Primary challenge - 2006
In the aftermath of stinging election defeats in 2000, 2002 and 2004, the DLC and Lieberman have lost credibility. With his political powerbase weakening, Lieberman is now facing the first serious primary opposition in his political career. In the aftermath of stinging election defeats in 2000, 2002 and 2004, the DLC and Lieberman have lost credibility. With his political powerbase weakening, Lieberman is now facing the first serious primary opposition in his political career. He is being challenged for the Democratic nomination for Senate by Ned Lamont, a progressive who opposes the neoconservative policies of the Bush administration and the Iraq War.

Dick Morris predicts Lieberman to lost to Lamont
In June, 2006, one of America's leading political consultants, Dick Morris, predicted that Lieberman would lose his primary fight against his progressive challenger, Ned Lamont.

Currently, speculation is rife that Lieberman might change parties or run as an Independent.

Lieberman's drastic slippage in the polls is being fueled by what is described as a blog-fueled campaign to unseat him as a number of blogs are now devoted to his ouster.

Michael Carmichael:

Joseph Isadore Lieberman is the Junior U.S. Senator from Connecticut well known for his support for the Iraq War and neoconservative policies.

Unsuccessful Vice Presidential candidacy
Lieberman was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for Vice-President in 2000, when he served as the running mate for former Vice President Albert Gore. Lieberman acquiesced to what many Americans still regard as the stealing of that election.

Neoconservative Democrat
Subsequently, he moved farther to the right, and he represents the most right-wing member of the Democratic Party and its leading supporter for the Iraq War.

Disloyal Critic of Bill Clinton
Lieberman was the first Democrat to criticize former President William Jefferson Clinton during the Lewinski scandal.

Religious orthodoxy
A devout and orthodox Jew, Lieberman was deemed to have the gravitas necessary to aid the Democratic ticket in 2000. Thus, he became the first Jewish candidate for the office of either President or Vice-President of the United States.

Darling of Bush and the neoconservatives
Following the State of the Union address in 2006, President George Bush kissed Lieberman and the resulting photographs caused a firestorm of controversy that weakened both politicians.

Darling of the Democratid Leadership Council
Lieberman is the darling of the Democrtic Leadership Council (DLC), an organization that has moved the Democratic Party decisively to the right from its inception in the late 1980s.

Dissipation of political power - Primary challenge
In the aftermath of stinging election defeats in 2000, 2002 and 2004, the DLC and Lieberman have lost credibility. With his political powerbase weakening, Lieberman is now facing the first serious primary opposition in his political career. He is being challenged for the Democratic nomination for Senate by Ned Lamont, a progressive who opposes the neoconservative policies of the Bush administration and the Iraq War.

Michael Polanyi (1891-1976) was a Hungarian polymath whose scientific work permitted him to gain deep insights into the methodology, philosophy and epistemology of science that he elaborated into an economic and political theory. Although a Keynesian critic of the Soviet Union, Polanyi attended the inaugural meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society in 1947.

Tacit Knowledge
With doctorates in medicine and chemistry, Polanyi deemed positivism to be a negative influence on science, especially when the state became engaged with scientific institutions. He cited the case of Lysenko in the Soviet Union as an example of destructive political interference in science. Polanyi argued for the creative role of the imagination and ‘tacit knowledge’ in the process of scientific discovery, echoing comments published by Einstein on the role of the imagination in theoretical physics.

Personal Knowledge
A critic of absolute objectivity, Polanyi was deeply suspicious of totalitarian manipulations of the economy. A Jewish intellectual, he left his post at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin in 1933 following Hitler’s rise to power. His philosophy of science is encapsulated in his books, Personal Knowledge and Science, Faith and Society. His philosophic work had an impact on Thomas Kuhn and many other philosophers of science.

The Logic of Liberty
Polanyi’s economic theory is the subject of The Logic of Liberty and The Contempt of Freedom in which he argues as a deeply committed Keynesian in favour of the free market and opposed to the Soviet economy. He corresponded with important economists including: Friedrich A Hayek; David Caradog Jones; Wolf Mayes and John Maynard Keynes. His increasing interest in economics led to his involvement with The Moot, a group of British intellectuals convened by Joseph H. Oldham, editor of the Christian Newsletter.
Polanyi's Economics
From 1935 Polanyi produced several essays on economics: Reflections on Marxism (1938); Collectivist Planning (1940); Principles of Economic Expansion (1944) and Soviets and Capitalism (1947). Much of Polanyi’s economic thought presents a Keynesian critique of Soviet economic policy.

Persecution during McCarthy Era
In spite of his vast publications on the subject, Polanyi was subjected to McCarthyite persecution by American bureaucrats in 1951 who suspected him of involvement in a subversive organisation – an absurd charge since he was a prominent member of the leading anti-communist organisation, The Congress on Cultural Freedom.

Political commentaries and professional affiliations
As a perceptive social critic of totalitarianism, Polanyi produced a stream of comments on current affairs, many of which were published in the Manchester Guardian during WWII.

Highly respected by his peers, Polanyi was a member of the Royal Society and a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. His son, John Charles Polanyi, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1986.
The Logic of Liberty
Polanyi’s economic theory is the subject of "The Logic of Liberty" and "The Contempt of Freedom" in which he argues as a deeply committed Keynesian in favour of the free market and opposed to the Soviet economy. His correspondence with important economists including: Friedrich A Hayek; David Caradog Jones; Wolf Mayes and John Maynard Keynes. His increasing interest in economics led to his involvement with The Moot, a group of British intellectuals convened by Joseph H. Oldham, editor of the Christian Newsletter. Other members of The Moot with whom Polanyi corresponded are T. S. Eliot and Karl Mannheim.

Polanyi's Economics
From 1935 Polanyi produced several essays on economics: "Reflections on Marxism" (1938); "Collectivist Planning" (1940); "Principles of Economic Expansion" (1944) and "Soviets and Capitalism" (1947). Much of Polanyi’s economic thought presents a Keynesian critique of Soviet economic policy.

Persecution during McCarthy Era
In spite of his vast publications on the subject, Polanyi was subjected to McCarthyite persecution by American bureaucrats in 1951 who suspected him of involvement in a subversive organisation – an absurd charge since he was a prominent member of the leading anti-communist organisation, The Congress of Cultural Freedom.

A critic of absolute objectivity, Polanyi was deeply suspicious of totalitarian manipulations of the economy. A Jewish intellectual, he left his post at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin in 1933 following Hitler’s rise to power. His philosophy of science is encapsulated in his books, "Personal Knowledge" and "Science, Faith and Society". In spite of his vast publications on the subject, Polanyi was subjected to persecution by American bureaucrats in 1951 who suspected him of involvement in a subversive organisation – an absurd charge since he was a prominent member of the leading anti-communist organisation, The Congress of Cultural Freedom.

The Mont Pelerin Society (MPS) is an international organisation, consisting of "free-market" economists, business leaders and journalists with a declared objective of "reaffirming and preserving private property rights, a moral code for both public and private activity, intellectual freedom, state behaviour limited by the rule of law, and 'the right of each individual to plan his own life'." MPS has close ties to the network of think tanks sponsored in part by the Atlas Economic Research Foundation.

The Society is named after the hotel near Montreux, Switzerland, where the first meeting was convened in 1947 by F. A. Hayek, to combat the 'state ascendancy and Marxist or Keynesian planning [that was] sweeping the globe'. Since then, 32 General and 27 Regional Meetings have been held and its membership has risen from under 50 to over 500.

Influence
MPS founder F. A. Hayek stressed that the society was to be a scholarly community arguing ideas against collectivism while not engaging in public relations or propaganda. However, the society has always been a focal point for the international free market think-tank movement: Hayek himself used it as a forum to encourage members such as Antony Fisher to pursue the think-tank route in favour of politics. Fisher went on the establish the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in London during 1971, the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. during 1973, and the Atlas Economic Research Foundation in 1981. In turn the Atlas Foundation supports a wide network of think-tanks, including the Fraser Institute and the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. All these organisations continue to share close ties with the MPS.

Prominent MPS members who have advanced to policy positions include Chancellor Ludwig Erhard of West Germany, President Luigi Einaudi of Italy, Chairman Arthur Burns of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, and, currently, Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic. Eight MPS members, including F. A. Hayek, Milton Friedman, and George Stigler, won Nobel prizes in economics. Of 76 economic advisers on Ronald Reagan's 1980 campaign staff, 22 were MPS members, including Anderson himself. The British economist John Jewkes was a former President of the Society.

History
In 1947, "36 scholars, mostly economists, with some historians and philosophers, were invited by Professor Friedrich Hayek to meet at Mont Pelerin, Switzerland, and discuss the state, and possible fate, of liberalism". Invitees included Henry Simons (who would later train Milton Friedman, later a president of the society, at the University of Chicago); the American former-Fabian socialist Walter Lippmann; Viennese Aristotelian Society leader Karl Popper; fellow Austrian School economist Ludwig von Mises; Sir John Clapham, a senior official of the Bank of England who from 1940-46 was the president of the British Royal Society; Otto von Hapsburg, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne; and Max von Thurn und Taxis, Bavaria-based head of the 400-year-old Venetian Thurn und Taxis family."

"The resulting Mont Pelerin Society aimed to 'facilitate an exchange of ideas between like-minded scholars in the hope of strengthening the principles and practice of a free society and to study the workings, virtues, and defects of market-oriented economic systems.'"

Carville's style
Carville's personal style is direct, frank and punctuated by devastating one-liners. He is regarded as a superb general consultant, a person who is familiar with virtually all operations in a political campaign.

It would not be an overstatement to say that he is a top-ranking heavyweight political consultant with very few peers.

Beginnings
His background shaped him. Born in a small town in Louisiana named, Carville, he attended Lousiana State University where he earned a BA and a law degree. He served stints in the US Marine Corps as well as teaching high school, before becoming a litigator in Baton Rouge, the capital of Louisiana. Louisiana is the capitol of political campaigning in the United States. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, there were no limits on campaign spending. Campaigns could receive corporate contributions and unrecorded cash donations, making it a virtual lottery for the political consulting industry. It was in this pacy and hard-hitting culture of winner-take-all politics that Carville earned his spurs as a political consultant. Before launching out on his own, Carville served his apprenticeship with Raymond Strother, one of the deans of American political consulting.

Eventually, he gravitated to work for Bill Clinton, governor of the contiguous state of Arkansas, and the rest is now history.

Carville's campaign technique
Perhaps, Carville's major contribution to the practice of political consulting is his fiercely critical concentration on defining the message of the campaign. Gifted with a rapier wit honed in Louisiana politics, the Marine Corps and the rural courtrooms of the South, Carville does not mince his words - neither does he allow his clients to present vague and amorphous messages to their audiences.

The 2004 presidential race
In 2004, Carville intervened directly into US presidential politics when the campaign of John Kerry ran adrift. On the day after the Republican Convention adjourned after a week of bashing Kerry and praising George Bush, Carville spearheaded a move to seize the helm of the floundering Democratic presidential campaign. Scheduled to appear on Meet the Press the following day, Carville threatened John Kerry with going public with a devastating critique of his badly mismanaged presidential campaign. Then, acting as an intermediary between Kerry and Bill Clinton, who had been stricken by a heart attack and was in intensive care awaiting surgery the next morning, Carville ordered a strategic reorientation to the failing presidential campaign. Carville ordered Kerry to go on the attack. He recommended a reshuffle of Kerry's political staff which meant a demotion for Bob Shrum, the leading consultant to the campaign. These dramatic events paid off. Kerry's campaign stabilized and began to gain ground on Bush. Kerry did well in the three presidential debates, but the intervention of Osama Bin Laden who launched a threatening video tape in the final days before the election tilted the balance to Bush, who won by the thinnest majority for any second term president since 1828.
