John Duffy is a retired academic and civil servant who is best known for his involvement in controversy over links to the alcohol industry. After an early spell with [[British Steel]] Duffy got a job with the Department of Statistics at the [[University of Edinburgh]] and the [[Medical Research Council Unit for Epidemiological Studies in Psychiatry]] and was based at the [[Royal Edinburgh Hospital]] from 1971. He wrote his first peer reviewed journal article on alcohol in 1977.<ref name="CV"/> Among his co-authors was the psychiatrist [[Jonathan Chick]] with whom he wrote two articles in 1978 and 1986<ref>Chick, J., Lloyd, G., Ritson, B. and Duffy, J.C (1986) Medical admissions in men: the risk among drinkers. In 1989 Duffy was a ‘joint grantholder’ with [[Martin Plant]] of a five year award from the alcohol industry funded [[Portman Group]] for £500,000. Promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1990 he was seconded to the Alcohol Research Group at the Department of Psychiatry to undertake the Portman Group funded work. <ref name="CV"/>

Both his LinkedIn page and his online CV include a period (from November 2003 to August 2009) during which Duffy no employment is listed. After he retired (in 2012) Duffy set up a consultancy firm [[John C Duffy Statistical Consultants]]. In 2012 he worked with [[Christopher Snowdon]] on a report for the [[Adam Smith Institute]] published in November of that year.

It was Incorporated by a Royal Charter in 1921.

In 1980 the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) merged with the Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers (IERE), originally the British Institution of Radio Engineers (Brit IRE). In 2006, the I.E.E. merged with the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (I.I.E.) to form the [[Institution of Engineering and Technology]] (I.E.T.). Before the merger, the I.E.E. was the largest professional engineering society in Europe, with a worldwide membership of around 120,000.

[[Richard Burt]] began his career as a journalist: from 1977 until 1980 he reported from Washington for the ''New York Times'' on national security issues. Prior to his management position at [[Diligence]], he worked from 1992 – 1995 as a partner at the consulting company [[McKinsey]]. Between 1985 and 1989, he served as US Ambassador in Bonn, after previously heading up the Europe section at the State Department. Burt was chief negotiator at the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks with Russia. In the corporate arena, Burt was a partner at McKinsey & Co. between 1991 and 1994 and has also held seats on the boards of Weirton Steel Corp., IGT, and Archer Daniels Midland.

Burt serves on the Board of [[Hollinger International]], as well as on the Board of International Games Technology (IGT), the largest gaming machine manufacturer in the world. He is also a trustee of the UBS family of mutual funds (New York board) as well as the Deutsche Bank’s board of the Scudder mutual fund group and is a member of the board of the Winslow Group, a hedge fund business. The [[EuroScience Open Forum]] (ESOF), held first time in Stockholm in 2004, is the biennial pan-European meeting on scientific research and innovation. The ESOF Hub was created in 2009 within the EuroScience Headquarters in Strasbourg, France, to ensure continuity from one event to the next, as the result of a partnership between [[Compagnia di San Paolo]], [[Fondazione Cariplo]], [[Riksbankens Jubileumsfond]], [[Robert Bosch Stiftung]], [[Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft]] (which are included in the Supervisory Board) and [[EuroScience]].

:Globally, only 31 per cent support new nuclear build. This average hides big differences between countries, with only 11 per cent of Brazilians supporting compared with 52 per cent of Poles. In Britain, the figure is 43 per cent.

:Research shows that people will be more accepting of nuclear power if they trust the people in charge. One component of that trust is how they perceive these people’s communication. The same Ipsos poll found that, globally, 54 per cent of people assessed Japanese officials’ and institutions’ communications to be honest and 56 per cent assessed them as timely. However, in Japan itself, only 28 per cent agreed that communications were honest and only 23 per cent that they were timely.

Pidgeon concluded:
The events at Fukushima show us that, with any highly complex hazardous technology, accidents can always happen – something the sociologist Charles Perrow many years ago called a ‘Normal Accident’.
While the impacts of the Tsunami have been a tragedy for the people of Japan, this should not deter us from drawing the right lessons from the Fukushima disaster.
