Northern Ireland Information organisations in January 1972

Colonel Tony Yarnold was the Deputy Chief Public Relations Officer at the Army Public Relations (PR) Branch, Headquarters Northern Ireland (HQNI) in January 1972. He was also the press room controller at HQNI. His immediate superior was Tony Staughton.[1]

The PR officer for 8th Infantry Brigade, known to the Bloody Sunday Inquiry as Major INQ 2146, reported to Yarnold.[2]

Col. Yarnold spent the day of Bloody Sunday in the press room at HQNI. Following the shootings, he kept the press desk open, receiving reports from 8th Infantry Brigade and putting them out as press releases.[3]

Col Yarnold told the Bloody Sunday Inquiry that a press release issued that day stating that "a total of well over two hundred rounds was fired in the general direction of the soldiers" was created by operations room staff at HQNI.[4]
