The next step (for some time abbreviated to tns) was the review of the Revolutionary Communist Tendency, initially published every six weeks, becoming a monthly and then (in 1985) the weekly paper of what was by then the Revolutionary Communist Party.

The next step Issue number 1 December 1979: 'Review' of the Revolutionary Communist Tendency
Advert for The next step from the RCT/RCP's theoretical journal Revolutionary Communist Papers, Issue 7, July 1981, p. 21.
'Victory to the Irish hunger-strikers!', sticker produced by the RCP newspaper The next step, 1981.

The next step was first published in December 1979 as a six-weekly review and was wound up at number 57 in March 1985 when it became a weekly, just after the end of the 1984/85 Miners Strike.[1] According to the British Library (BL) the weekly version of the paper began publication in 1985. The first edition held by the BL is that of 26 April 1985, [2] though according to RCP sources it went weekly on 19 April.[3] The BL notes that the name was changed in 1988 removing the abbreviation from the title along with the reference to the RCP. The review continued publishing until 25 February 1994 around two years before the dissolution of the RCP in 1996.[4]

In its launch edition in December the next step had articles on 'Smash the PTA!' (p. 1), 'Leyland: the Crunch' (p. 1), 'Fighting racism in Britain & Europe' (p 4), the 'Labour Party Conference' (p6), 'SWP Blues: whatever happened to trade union militancy' (p 8), 'Up against imperialism in africa' (p 9) and 'AUEW strike...broad left..' (p 10).
