The Edrington Group Limited is a major Scotch whisky company with expertise in blending, bottling, distributing and marketing. It produces several well-known brands, including The Famous Grouse, one of Scotland's best selling whisky, The Macallan, Highland Park Single Malt, The Glenrothes and Cutty Sark. The company also has a majority stake in Brugal rum, the market leader in the Dominican Republic.

Foundation

The company was founded in Glasgow in 1860 by William A. Robertson. The Edrington Group bought Highland Distilleries for £601 million in 1999.

Origin of Name

The Robertson sisters established The Robertson Trust, a charitable trust, in May 1961.[1] Elspeth, Agnes, and Ethel had inherited from their father William the controlling interest in Robertson & Baxter and Clyde Bonding Company. The business was renamed Edrington after a farm next to their estate in the Scottish Borders. Today The Edrington Group is wholly owned by the Trust. The Trust gave a record £7.4 million to charitable causes last year.

In the New Year Honours 2008, the Edrington Group's chair, John James Griffin Good, was made a Knight Bachelor "for services to Scotland".[2]
