Dr Peter J. W. Lutman is Head of the Weed Ecology Research Group at Rothamsted Research.[1] Rothamsted Research (formerly IACR) is part of a consortium of three research groups which carried out the UK government's farm-scale trials on three GM crops. Lutman was a co-author of a report to the government on the progress of the trials.[2]
Lutman also works for CropGen,[3] an initiative launched by the biotechnology industry to
- make the case for GM crops and foods by helping to achieve a greater measure of realism and better balance in the UK's public discussions on agriculture and food.[4]
Another scientist from Rothamstead, Dr Nigel Halford, is also part of CropGen, as is ex-Rothamsted scientist, Dr Guy Poppy. Scientists on the CropGen panel are paid "honoraria" for their work as panel members.[5]
Lutman is technical secretary of the BCPC (formerly known as the British Crop Protection Council) Research & Development Subcommittee (Weeds). The BCPC's corporate members include the Crop Protection Association, comprising all the major agrochemical/GM companies such as Bayer, BASF, Dow, Monsanto and Syngenta.
