Pat McFadden is the UK shadow minister for Europe, appointed in October 2014 in a Labour Party reshuffle.

McFadden has been the Labour MP for Wolverhampton South East since 2005. He was business minister under Labour prime minister Gordon Brown and also a former special adviser to the Labour Party.[1] His last role in the shadow cabinet was as shadow secretary of state for Business, Innovation and Skills][2]between May and October 2010.

Background

McFadden gained an MA in Politics from the University of Edinburgh in 1988 and was chair of Scottish Labour Students from 1986 to 1987.[3] In 1998, he became a researcher to Donald Dewar, then Labour's spokesperson on Scottish affairs. In 1993 he began working as speechwriter and policy adviser to then Labour leader John Smith. Following Smith's death in 1994, McFadden became political secretary and policy adviser to new Labour leader Tony Blair.[4]

From 2006 to 2007, McFadden was a parliamentary secretary in the Cabinet Office. He was a Minister of State in the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform/Business, Innovation and Skills from 2007 to 2010, before becoming Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills in 2010.[5]

MP's expenses

In 2009 it emerged that McFadden claimed £5,581 in legal fees, stamp duty and solicitors fees for the purchase of a second home in his constituency of Wolverhampton South East, with a further £4,807.41 being spent on furniture for the property.[6]
