The Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Support to Public Diplomacy was created in 2006 "to support and coordinate public diplomacy efforts, and serve as the lead for developing policy within DOD on countering ideological support for terrorism."[1]

The New York Times reported in April 2009 that the Office had been abolished by Obama administration in an effort to distance itself from Bush era propaganda operations:
