Background

From 1998 to 2006, the Cabinet Office published annually on its website a Public

Bodies Directory.  Containing contributions from all Whitehall Departments, including

the Northern Ireland Office, the directories gave a comprehensive snapshot of the

public bodies sponsored by the UK Government as at 31 March each year.  Public

Bodies 1998 to Public Bodies 2006 respectively can be viewed at:

http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/other/agencies/index.asp .

Following a fundamental review of its functions, the Cabinet Office decided that, from

2007, all Whitehall Departments, including the Cabinet Office, would be required to

publish on the web their own Public Bodies report.  The Northern Ireland Office’s

report for 2008can be viewed at:

http://www.nio.gov.uk/public_bodies_2008_nio_annual_report.pdf

Latest revision as of 12:53, 14 June 2017

The Northern Ireland Office (NIO) was established in 1972 with the dissolution of the Northern Ireland Government and the onset of direct rule from London amidst a worsening security situation.[1]

On 12 April 2010, the NIO transferred responsibility for policing and criminal justice to the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive. It remains responsible for overseeing the Northern Ireland devolution settlement and representing Northern Ireland interests at UK Government level and UK Government interests in Northern Ireland. The department also has responsibility for national security in respect of Northern Ireland as well as human rights, elections, legacy issues (including current ongoing public inquiries).[2]
