Newgate Communications is a PR and lobbying agency based in the United Kingdom, owned by Porta Communications and David Wright.

Background

The agency was founded by David Wright, an ex-founding director of Citigate, in 2011.

Newgate Communications is part of the Porta Communications group, also set up by David Wright in 2010.

The name of the communications group seems to link with the many staff who have swapped Citigate for Newgate including Jonathan Clare (another ex-founding director of Citigate and Deborah Saw). [1] [2]

In November 2014 Porta Communications bought PPS Group for £6.2million, paid for in a combination of cash and shares in Porta Communications and merged it with Newgate. The deal meant Stephen Byfield, the managing director of PPS Group, is the new head of Newgate's London and Brussels practices.[3]

Fracking lobbyists

Newgate is a longstanding fracking industry lobbyist. It touts as a major success story on its website how it supported fracking firm Third Energy in its application to hydraulically fracture a well in North Yorkshire, helping it to secure the first “fracking” approval in the UK for four years.

In 2017 Newgate boasted:

Our team helped Third build its reputation in the local community and nationally ahead of a highly charged and widely reported planning committee meeting, and subsequently through a judicial review. It is now working in tandem with Third on preparations for the operation, due to take place later this year. [4]

In September 2018, the Guardian reported that Newgate was no longer retained by Third Energy, due to the uncertainty about when the company would be given the go-ahead at its Nth Yorkshire KM8 exploration site. Newgate was still listing Third as a client on the APPC register in the quarter up until 31 August so it's not clear exactly when it stopped working with Third. The agency continues to retain industry lobby group UKOOG.[5]

Community engagement

Newgate bought up the high-profile PPS Group a few years back and promotes 'community engagement' as one of its niche strengths. Now rebranded as 'Newgate Engage', it was 'the first company of its kind in the UK to focus exclusively on local community and political engagement. We have unrivalled experience of working with communities up and down the country, helping housebuilders, developers, retailers and many others consult more effectively with communities and engage with local politicians and the media.'

"Getting under the skin of a local community, mapping out the individuals and organisations that matter, and helping you get them onside, has never been more crucial".[4]
