Michael Meacher MP

Michael Meacher is a former Labour government minister. He has been Labour Party MP for Oldham West & Royton since 1997. He was previously MP for Oldham West from 1970 to 1997.

Meacher passed away on the 21 October 2015, prompting a by-election in his seat of Oldham West and Royton. [1]

Parliamentary career

Meacher's ministerial posts have included: Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department of Industry) 1974-5, Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department of Health and Social Security) 1975-6, Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department of Trade) 1976-9, Minister of State (Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions) (Environment) 1997-01, and Minister (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) (Environment)2001-03.[2]

In the 2015 general election, Meacher was re-elected with a majority of 14,738. [3]
