John Lipsky is and American banker who is on the board of HSBC Holdings plc.

He is the former deputy managing director and special advisor to the managing director at the International Monetary Fund and has held many roles with some of the worlds most powerful private banks.

Career

Lipsy began working at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the 1970s, helping to manage the Fund's exchange rate surveillance procedure and as the Fund's resident representative in Chile. He then moved to American private investment bank Salomon Brothers in 1984, where his roles included chief economist and managing director.[1]

Lipsky has also served as the chief economist and director of research at Chase Manhattan Bank; chief economist of JP Morgan; a director of the American Council on Germany and the Japan Society; a trustee of the Economic Club of New York; and a global policy adviser for Anderson Global Macro, LLC.[2]

He is currently a senior fellow, Foreign Policy Institute at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University; a co-chairman of the Aspen Institute Program on the World Economy; a director of the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Center for Global Development; a member of the advisory board of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research; a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; and chairman of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the International Monetary System.[3]

IMF

In September 2006 Lipsky was appointed first deputy managing director of the IMF and then in September 2011 he was special advisor to the managing director until November 2011.[2]

HSBC

Lipsky was appointed to board of HSBC in March 2012, he is currently independent non-executive director, member of the group risk committee, the nomination committee and the group remuneration committee.[3]
