He began his career in the US Army after graduating from the University of Texas in 1985, and since then has served among the other places in Philippines, Japan, Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2009, after 25 years of experience, he retired from the army service. Col. Haynes teaches counterinsurgency, employment of host nation military forces, and combat advising for the Naval Postgraduate School [2], and in addition to this he is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI) [3], an international affairs think tank.
