The Right Honourable Sir James Fitz-Allen Mitchell is an economist, agronomist and politician. Born on the 15th May 1931 on the Island of Bequia in the Grenadines, he was educated in St. Vincent, at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad and Tobago and the University of British Columbia, Canada.
He is the former Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and has been a dominant figure there for almost three decades. He became Prime Minister in July 1984 and was re-elected for four successive terms. He entered politics in 1966 by winning a legislative seat as a candidate of the St. Vincent Labour Party. In 1975 he founded the New Democratic Party (NDP) and became the Parliamentary Opposition Leader[1].
