Dame Helen Alexander was chairman of the board of UBM PLC from 2012-16 [1] and a former board member of British energy firm Centrica. She died in August 2017 following a long battle with cancer.

Dame Helen was the first female president of the Confederation of Business Industry (CBI) from 2009 – 2011, the time immediately following the 2008 global financial crisis.

Career=

Alexander began her publishing career at Gerald Duckworth and Faber & Faber, moving to The Economist in 1985 as Marketing Manager. She became Managing Director of The Economist Intelligence Unit in 1993 and in 1997 became Chief Executive of The Economist Group, a position she held for 11 years until June 2008.[1]

She was awarded a CBE for services to publishing in 2004 and in June 2011 was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to business and for being President of the CBI. She has an MBA from INSEAD.[1]

Centrica

From 2003 – 2011, Dame Helen was a Non-Executive Director on the Centrica Board and Chair of the Centrica Remuneration Committee from 2005 until 2011.
