People

President

  • The Lord Howe of Aberavon CH, QC, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs from 1983-89, became President of the Centre in 1992.

Vice Presidents

  • Graham Greene CBE, was Chairman of the Great Britain-China Centre from 1986-1997 (committee member since 1985). He was appointed as a vice-president since 1997. He was also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Museum.
  • Lady Pamela Youde OBE, was vice chairman of the Great Britain-China Centre 1988-2000, and is Trustee of the Great Britain-China Educational Trust since 2000.
  • Sir David Brewer CMG is a Director and Senior Consultant to International Financial Services London. He was Lord Mayor or London (2005-2006). Previously he was a Special Advisor to the Sedgwick Group and he is an Alderman for the Ward of Bassishaw in the City of London. Was GBCC chairman October 1997-2004.

Chairman

  • Peter Batey OBE is Senior Chairman of Vermilion Partners Ltd., an advisory and investment firm focused on China. Click on the link to see his resumé. He joined the Committee in July 2003 and took up the Chairmanship in September 2004.

Vice Chairmen

  • Mr Hugh Davies CMG, China Business Advisor, Old Mutual plc. He is a former Executive Director, Prudential Corporation Asia, and former British Ambassador on the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group for Hong Kong. Joined Committee as Hon.Treas. February 2002-December 2004. Vice-Chairman since December 2004.

Former Vice Chairman

Deceased 3 October 2007 - Professor Elisabeth Croll CMG, Vice-Principle and Professor of Anthropology at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London. Joined October 2000. Appointed vice-chairman February 2003.

Former vice-Presidents

Deceased 26 March 2005 - Lord Callaghan of Cardiff KG, Vice-President of GBCC until his death, was Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he opened the Centre in 1974, and Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979. He was appointed to the committee in 1984.

Deceased 17 July 2005 - Sir Edward Heath KG MBE, Vice-President of GBCC - was Prime Minister at the time of the establishment of full diplomatic relations with China in 1972. He was appointed to the committee in 1984 until his death.[1]
