David Hamilton is the Labour MP for Midlothian. [1] Hamilton has served in this constituency since 2001, and in 2010 he was elected for a third term with a majority of 10,349. [2]

He also currently serves as the Scottish Labour whip in the House of Commons. [3]

Hamilton has however announced that he will be stepping down from his parliamentary role in May 2015. [3]

Background

Hamilton is described as having a mining and trade union background having worked as a miner from 1966 to 1985 in various collieries. He was union delegate at Monktonhall Colliery between 1976 and 1986. Whilst the miners strike in 1984/1985 saw Hamilton lead 6 of the strike centres in the Mid and East Lothian area. [2]

Prior to becoming an MP, Hamilton was also a councillor in Midlothian for six years. [3]

SInce joining parliament Hamilton has been part of four select committees, the work & pensions select committee, the Scottish affairs select committee, the procedures select committee and he is still currently on the defence select committee. [2]

Hamilton also had the opportunity of serving as parliamentary private secretary to Ed Miliband when he was shadow secretary of state for the Department of Energy and Climate Change in 2010. [2]
