Background

According to its website "Clarion Events can trace its roots back to 1947 and takes great pride in being one of the oldest independent event organisers in the UK. More recently the firm has developed an international portfolio of brands and now has interests in a number of global vertical industries". [1] They create networking opportunities for a range of sectors, attracting "buyers with spending and decision-making power who are looking for solutions and innovations to help move their businesses forward. Putting them in contact with the providers of these solutions, and with each other, is our overriding objective, always." [2] Clarion Events operate across multiple sectors, including Defence & Security, Gaming & Gambling, Life Sciences, Oil & gas, Cards and Payments, Power & Utilities, Telecoms, and a range of sectors. [3]

The company operates globally with over 500 staff organising over 200 networking events each year. With offices in the USA, Germany, Brazil, Singapore, UAE, The Netherlands, Turkey, South Africa and the UK Clarion claims to have an 'effective and broad platform to support our sector growth plans and provide the infrastructure for new business development' .[4]

International Casino Conference: 2 February 2015

This conference is organised annually by Clarion in cooperation with the European Casino Association. It provides a "comfortable and confidential environment to exchange views on the most burning issues affecting the land-based industry". [5] The agenda for 2015 included: updates on the newly elected European Commission, the transformation of customer experience, results from a mystery visits project and a progress review of resort-style gaming in Europe. [6]

Speakers included: Ron Goudsmit, Chairman, European Casino Association (ECA) Simon Thomas, CEO, The Hippodrome, Harrie Temmink, Deputy Head, Online & Postal Unit, DG Internal Market & Services, European Commission, Marc Campman, CEO, Love Social Media, and Damià Calvet Valera, Director, Generalitat de Catalunia. [7]

Harrie Temmink, Deputy Head, Online & Postal Unit, DG Internal Market & Services, European Commission presented a session on What will be the outlook of the new European Commission? where he gave delegates an overview of the new Commission and what its working framework will be and a discussion on developments around infringement cases, the recommendations on consumer protection and responsible advertising, integrity of sport and match-fixing, and protection against fraud and money laundering.[8]
