Bernt Reitan was Senior Vice President of Materials and Technology and Managing Director of Elkem Aluminium between 1988 and 2000 while Iceland's Elkem alloys plant was being expanded)[5]. In 2009, while Reitan was Executive Vice President of Alcoa Elkem's subsidiary Elkem Aluminium was sold to Alcoa. Bernt Reitan broke the ground at Alcoa's massive Alcoa Fjardaál smelter, their poster greenfield project, in the tiny fishing village of Reydarfjörður in 2004. He was heavily involved in the project which was completed in 2006. The project caused some of the biggest protests Iceland had ever seen over the Kárahnjúkar Dam, which flooded more than 60km of rare wilderness highlands to power it.[6]

Bernt Reitan sits on the Icelandic-American Chamber of Commerce which promotes trade and business between Iceland and the USA[7]
