Arminka Helic (Baroness Helic) was chief of staff to first secretary of state William Hague from 2010 to 2014.[1]
Helic is now working on general election strategy role for Hague following his transfer from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to Leader of the House of Commons in July 2014. [2]
In September 2014 Helic was appointed to the House of Lords by David Cameron. She was made a life peer on 18 September 2014 taking the title of Baroness Helic, of Millbank in the City of Westminster. [3]
Background
Dr Helic is a Bosnian Muslim and foreign policy expert who became a Conservative adviser after fleeing the Yugoslav conflict of the 1990s.[4]
In the aftermath of Israel's 2006 attack on Lebanon, Hague notably, given his previously staunch support for Israel, stated that 'elements of the Israeli response are disproportionate'. It was alleged by the neoconservative journalist Matthew d'Ancona that 'dark rumours swirl around the Tory Party about the influence of Mr Hague's staff - especially his senior adviser, Dr Arminka Helic'.[5]
