ON FOREIGN and economic policy France and Britain may be chalk and cheese, but there are fascinating parallels between political conditions on the two sides of the Channel. This was my unexpected and, I hope, instructive conclusion from spending last weekend in Versailles at the Franco-British Colloque, an annual gathering of the two countries’ politicians, businessmen and opinion formers.[1]
