According to historian Thomas E. Mahl, Halpern worked for [[British Security Coordination]] (BSC) in the US during World War Two, with the cover symbol G.111. Under this designation he was responsible for controlling Arabic, Senegalese, French Persian, Italian and Turkish broadcasts at [[WRUL]], a Boston shortwave radio station under cover British influence.Later, his designation was changed to G.400, which signified he was the head of [[SOE|Special Operations Executive]]'s Political and Minorities Section]] at BSC.<ref>Thomas E.
