Mitchells and Butlers are the UK based company who operate large chains of pubs, and restaurants. With a £2 billion annual turnover and 1,600 outlets they are by far the largest pub operator it the UK. [1]

Joe Lewis, a billionaire currency trader, is the biggest shareholder. Horse racing tycoons John Magnier and JP McManus are also shareholders through Elpida their investment vehicle. [2] In recent months M&Bs have found it difficult to provide steady corporate governance with several high profile changes to their board. The Guardian reported that "over several months, a number of candidates to join the board as independent non-executive directors – looking out for the interests of all shareholders – were blocked by M&B's powerful investors or their representatives in the boardroom." [3]

In 2011 M&Bs signed up to Andrew Lansley's Public Health Responsibility Deal as part of the Responsibility Deal Alcohol Network.
