Anti-Sharia protests

Baker organised a protest planned against Harrow Central Mosque for 29 August 2009, the Harrow Times reported:.[2]

There are fears the protest could turn nasty, after a similar demonstration in Birmingham last weekend descended into a pitched battle between police, protesters, and Islamic groups.

However, Bill Baker, one of the organisers of the protest, said ties had been cut with groups English Defence League and Casual United, who he blamed for the trouble in Birmingham.[3]

Baker cancelled the protest after the mosque said claims it planned to host Sharia court hearings were false.[4]

He later criticised a demonstration planned at the same mosque by Stop the Islamisation of Europe for 11 September 2009:

“The protesters are looking for a reaction. There's no political points that they can score from it.
“All they are going to do is turn people who are against Sharia Law against them, and it will show them to be the thugs that they are. That's football hooligans for you I'm afraid.”
He added: “A lot of these people are aged between 18 and 21. They've got the brains of rocking horses some of them.”[5]
